MISSION STATEMENT: Since 2001, the George Sugarman Foundation has awarded grants to visual artists who are engaged in creating new works of fine art, whose work shows promise, and who are in need of financial assistance. Photographers, performance artists, dancers, musicians, and students currently enrolled in degree programs are NOT ELIGIBLE FOR GRANTS. In addition, grants are not awarded to pay past debts, medical bills and, generally speaking, travel expenses, although exceptions, when appropriate, have been made in the latter category. A review panel examines all applications.

In an era when much visual art production fails to address profound issues of violence, poverty, war and discrimination, the George Sugarman Foundation encourages the creation of artworks that incorporate humane themes. Honoring a tradition of social engagement embodied in the life and work of George Sugarman, we are seeking to expand our partnership role with working artists to embrace the practice of socially conscious art.

Furthering that goal, and in recognition of the work of George Sugarman, grants in 2008 will be awarded to sculptors only. Specifically, the Foundation is seeking applications from sculptors engaged in creating permanent works for publicly accessible outdoor spaces. Applicants working in the modernist and abstract traditions, who have already obtained some financial support and a guaranteed site from other organizations, institutions, governmental or private donors will be given preferential consideration. We are planning to work in partnership with co-funders to assist in making the completion of the sculpture and its permanent installation a reality. Applicants must fulfill the requirements below, and the Sugarman Foundation will also honor the requirements of any co-funders.
