My oil paintings investigate the incongruous harmonies of the American landscape – a nation forged by the disparate, competing forces of freedom, subjugation, peace, prosperity and hostility – by employing surprising shapes, jeweled surfaces, and a luminous palette. This most recent suite of 100 paintings, entitled "Ship of Fools: Portrait of a Confederate Navy", confronts our country's ongoing obsession with armed conflict by recalling the alarming cruelty and exhilarating beauty of nineteenth-century maritime warfare. |
