The Foundation
From 2001-2008, the George Sugarman Foundation awarded grants to visual artists who engaged in creating new works of fine art, whose work showed promise, and who were in need of financial assistance.
As of 2009, the George Sugarman Foundation, Inc. will no longer offer financial grants to artists, but will continue to serve the wishes of George Sugarman through the donation of his artworks to institutions, museums and universities throughout the United States.
A definitive Sugarman collection may be seen on the campus of Purdue University North Central in Westville, Indiana. The newly-constructed hospital at University of California Los Angeles has acquired a Sugarman outdoor sculpture that graces its entrance. We will soon post a list of recently-donated works by George Sugarman, and their new locations.
In an era when much visual art production fails to address profound issues of violence, poverty, war and discrimination, the George Sugarman Foundation encouraged the creation of artworks that incorporated humane themes. Honoring a tradition of social engagement embodied in the life and work of George Sugarman, we sought to expand our partnership role with working artists to embrace the practice of socially conscious art.
The George Sugarman Foundation is proud of the role it has played in the lives of the painters and sculptors who received grants. It has been an honor and a pleasure to assist these artists, to see their work brought to the public eye, and a thrill to see careers blossom and artists grow.
